The Corn Exchange, London

Main contractors

Commercial strip-out and enabling works to the reception and entrance at 55 Mark Lane, including curtain walling and two revolving doors.

Project overview

R.E.B Group was appointed to undertake a package of commercial strip-out and enabling works at 55 Mark Lane, focusing on the reception area and associated entrance spaces.

The works involved removing existing façade elements, entrance features, floor finishes, ceilings and reception fixtures to prepare the building for its next stage of refurbishment. The scope required a coordinated approach to the removal of both internal finishes and external entrance components.

Scope of works

R.E.B Group's package included:

  • Removal of existing curtain walling, external canopy and two revolving doors
  • Removal of external signage and tiled flooring
  • Strip out of internal ceramic tiles and entrance matting within the reception and lift lobby
  • Removal of ceilings to the ground-floor portal
  • Removal of metal cladding to four columns
  • Removal of aluminium cover plates to existing balustrades
  • Removal of the reception desk, associated wall and banquette seating
  • Removal of selected doors, overpanels and internal directory signage
  • Removal of redundant tower heaters and lighting, with electrical disconnections by others

The challenge – high-level glazing & entrance logistics

A key consideration was the removal of the existing curtain walling and other entrance features, including high-level glass panes and the external canopy.

The works required specialist equipment to safely lower high-level glazing to ground level, with a vacuum glass lifter allowed for within the programme. Coordination of scaffolding, hoarding and site logistics was also important to facilitate the removal works safely and efficiently.

The project was planned around two continuous phases, requiring careful sequencing of the reception strip-out and external entrance works to support the wider refurbishment programme.

Our approach

R.E.B Group developed a coordinated strip-out package covering both the internal reception areas and external entrance elements.

The methodology incorporated the planned removal of curtain walling, revolving doors and associated façade components, alongside the systematic removal of internal finishes and fixtures. Specialist glass-handling equipment was included to assist with the controlled lowering of high-level glazing.

Coordination with the main contractor was required to arrange suitable access provisions, scaffolding, hoarding and waste removal, ensuring the works could progress in line with the agreed programme.

Project outcome

The project demonstrates R.E.B Group's capability in delivering commercial reception strip-out and enabling works involving façade removal, high-level glazing and complex entrance features.

By combining systematic internal demolition with specialist glass-handling provisions and coordinated site logistics, R.E.B Group provided a comprehensive enabling works package to support the building's planned refurbishment.
