Rosebery School, Epsom

Public sector

Perimeter cutting and removal of the existing parquet floor, preparing a school hall for a new Harlequin floor.

Project overview

Rosebery School in Epsom required specialist flooring preparation works to accommodate a new Harlequin floor area within the school hall.

R.E.B was instructed to undertake the perimeter cutting around the new flooring area and remove and dispose of the existing parquet flooring, preparing the designated area for the next stage of the flooring installation.

The challenge

The project required accurate perimeter cutting around the proposed Harlequin floor area, followed by the removal and disposal of the existing parquet flooring.

During the initial site visit, a potential clash was identified between the proposed flooring layout shown on the drawings and an existing trench running around the perimeter of the hall. This required coordination with the client to ensure the final layout was correctly marked out before the cutting works commenced.

The works also needed to be carefully coordinated with other contractors operating within the same hall to minimise disruption and maintain a safe and efficient working environment.

Our approach

R.E.B planned the works around the site conditions and the requirements of the new flooring installation.

The scope of work included:

  • Perimeter cutting: Neatly cutting around the perimeter of the designated Harlequin flooring area to establish a clean, defined boundary
  • Existing floor removal: Lifting and removing the existing parquet flooring within the agreed work area
  • Waste management: Carting away the removed parquet flooring, leaving the area clear for subsequent works
  • Site coordination: Liaising with the client regarding the revised setting-out to address the potential conflict with the perimeter trench
  • Dust control: Identifying the benefit of using dust extraction equipment or a vacuum attachment during cutting to help reduce airborne sawdust
  • Health and safety planning: Allowing for preparation of the required RAMS and site documentation ahead of the works

The project was allocated an allowance of six man-days, with the works scheduled over an estimated two-to-three-day period.

Managing site constraints

A key consideration was ensuring that the proposed Harlequin flooring perimeter did not conflict with the existing trench around the hall.

The client contact was to re-mark the layout to resolve this issue before the cutting operation. Coordination with other personnel working in the hall was also identified as essential to prevent interference with the work area and support safe execution.

These considerations formed part of the project planning process, helping establish a clear scope and identify potential issues before work began.

The outcome

The project was scheduled to deliver a neatly cut perimeter around the new Harlequin flooring area, together with the removal and clearance of the existing parquet flooring.

These works were intended to provide a clearly defined and cleared area ready for the next stage of the flooring project.

Project summary

Rosebery School demonstrates R.E.B's planned approach to specialist flooring preparation, existing floor removal and site coordination. By identifying the perimeter trench conflict during the initial visit and considering dust control and the presence of other contractors, the project requirements and key site constraints were identified ahead of the planned works.
